ABAHD’s resettlement program focuses on Afghan refugees and immigrants. These refugees are vulnerable and fleeing violent and dire circumstances. Our resettlement team includes Dari and Pashto speakers, many of whom themselves were refugees or immigrants. In the coming weeks and months, the number of incoming refugees will increase and so will the needs.
These families are highly traumatized and need intensive, individualized support from our Dari/Pashto-speaking case managers and psychologists to start their new lives in our community. Our resettlement program features comprehensive case management, including, but not limited to:
-Pre-migration documentation and assistance
-Assistance with finding initial housing
-Furniture and household goods donations
-In-depth and ongoing cultural orientation
-Assistance with accessing medical and mental health services
-Enrolling refugees in ESL classes and vocational support
-Enrolling children in schools
-Linking refugees with appropriate local resources
-Matching clients with volunteers and tutors
-Parenting support
-Managing crises or family upheaval
-Mental health support
-Social gatherings and celebrations
ABAHD’s donation (and volunteerism) program serves as one of the most important steps toward the successful resettlement of the refugees from their temporary living arrangements to permanent homes.
Donation of clothing, household items, furniture and other essentials gives these refugees ease of mind and enables them to focus on other aspects of life, such as obtaining a driving license, attending school, taking career training courses and finding work as they embark on the journey of self-sufficiency. Volunteers are needed to assist in the following areas:
-Collecting donations
-Assessment of families in need.
-Delivering donations
-Setting up doctor appointments
-Translation (Dari and Pashto)
-School enrollments
-Donations Inventory Management
-Transportation to appointments, as needed and on a case-by-case basis
-Scheduling Lyft/Uber rides to/from appointments
-Update and maintain refugee information database
-Weekly check-ins with program director
-Others tasks, as assigned and needed
ABAHD provides a foundational program, teaching cultural and linguistic skills to our newly arrived Afghan refugee families.
We base our program on small groups to make learning effortless for all participants. The programs are offered through audio and video in small soundbites which are delivered via social media and SMS text to make access easy and learning natural.
